HRT: HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY
Hormone Replacement Therapy otherwise known as HRT or ERT (Estrogen Replacement Therapy) is a medical treatment in which a woman can have her declining or absent hormones supplemented with medication that mimics the body’s natural hormones. The primary benefit of HRT is in relieving the body of menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, low libido, insomnia and other problematic side effects. The hormones that are most readily supplemented are Estrogen and Progesterone, and, more recently, Testosterone is gaining popularity.
In Surgical Menopause, most women who are under the age of 45 at the time of surgery are recommended by their physician to take HRT in order to not only relieve extreme menopausal symptoms but also to keep the body healthy as it is not intended to lose all it’s hormones at such a young age.HRT helps decrease the likelihood of heart disease, cognitive decline, Osteoporosis, and earlier death in younger women.
HRT is not only a good option for younger women in surgical menopause, it can be helpful to women of all ages in surgical or natural menopause who are experiencing uncomfortable symptoms and side effects from this condition.
The best way to get started on HRT is to find a doctor who specializes in both Surgical Menopause and HRT, and discuss which hormones and delivery system may be the best fit for you.
